As speculation mounts that new Conservative Prime Minister Liz Truss could call a snap General Election this autumn, members of St Albans Liberal Democrats have unanimously resolved to back the sitting MP Daisy Cooper as their candidate.
Under national Liberal Democrat party rules, every local party is required to pass a resolution to either choose their sitting MP or instead start a competitive selection process, where the sitting MP can compete against other candidates.
Speaking to a packed room, with more than 100 local party members present, Daisy Cooper said: “In my first two and a half years as St Albans MP, I believe I’ve shown the difference that a hardworking MP can make. From hospital services, to saving our high streets and fire safety, I’ve put our local St Albans issues on the national stage. I believe I’ve also demonstrated that I’m an MP who is visible, who is part of our community, who communicates, who cares and who gets things done.
“Looking ahead to what’s coming down the line for St Albans and the country, I’m genuinely scared for people but I’m even more determined to speak up for our area.
“Our NHS is now perpetually on the brink, climate change is here, and we’re facing a cost-of-living catastrophe which will affect families, businesses, care homes and schools.”
Speaking after the meeting, Daisy Cooper said: “I’m ready to fight the next General Election whenever it comes but right now, the Liberal Democrats are calling on the next Prime Minister to scrap the energy price cap for households and support small businesses with their eye-watering energy bills too.
“It’s outrageous that whilst the British public are scared about soaring bills, the Conservatives’ zombie government has been asleep at the wheel for weeks.
“Liberal Democrats have led the public debate on the cost-of-living emergency for the last year, being the first party to call for a windfall tax on the super-profits of the big oil and gas companies, the first party to call for this autumn’s energy price hike to be scrapped, and the first to call for a pandemic-like package of support for small businesses.
“It’s an honour to be the MP for St Albans every single day and I will continue to use my voice so that the people of St Albans continue to be heard.”
