Daisy Cooper, MP for St Albans, rolled the first bowl of the season at Harperbury Bowls Club who have a lot to celebrate in this, their 70th Anniversary year.
Club Member Jan Taylor recently won the much coveted Bowls England Coach of the Year title at their 2025 awards.
The Club were also celebrating two vital upgrades to their Clubhouse which will make it warmer and more accessible for their members.
As well as installing a new accessible toilet, the clubhouse recently secured a grant from Sports England’s Movement Fund with the support of Daisy, to install a new insulated roof which will make the clubhouse much cosier for members in winter.
Daisy said:
“It was lovely to join the club members for their first match of the season and to roll the first bowl with some advice from Jan – Bowls England’s Coach of the Year!
“It’s clearly a thriving club run by a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers and I’m delighted that they’ve secured the Sports England grant to upgrade the clubhouse so after the summer season, members can continue to use it for activities throughout the colder months too.”
Jan Taylor said:
“During the summer months we play competitively against a number of other local bowls clubs and in the winter months – to keep members together and engaged – we have a full range of activities based at our clubhouse to keep our members physically, mentally and socially active including through our walking group, golf society, ‘whist’ afternoons, games mornings and quiz evenings.
“But our clubhouse is a wooden construction built by members many years ago, and has been drafty and expensive to heat for a long time.
“With the increased cost of energy, we were delighted to secure a grant from Sports England’s Movement Fund with Daisy’s support to make this happen.
“In the winter months some members find that they miss the companionship, support and routine of the club so making it much cosier will help to keep our members together all year round.”
