Daisy Cooper MP responded to the Conservative’s budget, saying: ”This really is a bottom-of-the-barrel Budget.
”This Conservative budget offers nothing for families and pensioners in St Albans. Struggling families are facing spiralling rents and mortgages, and sky-high energy and food bills, all because of this Conservative government’s continued mismanagement of our economy.
”The public will see this for what is: a desperate last throw of the dice by a Conservative government that has driven our NHS into the ground, trashed the economy and overseen a record fall in living standards.
”Everybody is worse off after this Conservative government hiked taxes to record levels. The changes to NI are cancelled out by freezing the personal allowance which pulls thousands of hard working people into high tax brackets, and costing an average worker an extra £400.
”Time and time again, the Liberal Democrats have called on this Conservative government to raise funds by putting a proper windfall tax on the big oil and gas companies and reverse the tax cuts they’ve given to the big banks: measures that would raise billions that could be invested into our NHS and ailing public services.
”Our high street businesses have been left lurching from one year to the next with business rates relief extended only for a year each time, unable to plan ahead into future years.
”Week-in week-out, as I knock on doors in St Albans, fellow residents tell me they are fed up with more empty promises from this Conservative government. We need real change and a general election now so that we can finally kick this out-of-touch Conservative government out of office.”
